Happy Birthday Gerry!

Saturday, February 21, 2004

Gerry is playing in a squash tournament tonight. Earlier, we went to the pool for a swim and followed up with some seashell collecting on the beach. On our way home, grabbed some McDonalds..yes...and drove to a runway, scarfed down some nuggets while the boys and I watched airplanes land. Now they are watching Stuart Little on TV. What a fairly normal day. I could be anywhere in this Hemisphere! Have I been craving Caribou or Moose? Perhaps. but the seafood here is not a bad substitute.

it's 1653 local time. It is still above 30c. It is still very humid. If it rained, it wouldn't be any more or less humid. Who's complaining?! How can I find fault with my choice of "winter boots"? The question is, "These flip-flops, or those ones?"

Maybe I should just go bare-foot, everyone else does!

I Sprayed the rooms today for misc tropical bugs. The big cockroaches don't bother me so much anymore,(any shoe will destroy them) it's the ants and geckos that poop anywhere that really tick my liver! Anyway, sprayed the rooms, went back in an hour later to find a large-ish geckko gasping for breath! As much as I'm not fond of their waste products all over the place, it's a horrible thing to see one twitching with it's last bit of life. On that note, the tails of these lizards continue to twitch well after life has passed them by. Wierd. So, no more ants for the moment, and no more geckkos this day either. rest in peace leettle leezard!
moce.(pronounced moe-thay) Fijian for sleep, goodbye, see yah later....

I don't want to eat on a day that is sunny, I just want a plate and a bucket of bunnies....classic Veggie tales.

rain rain go away, come again another day...just kidding. We are loving this cooler weather. Just can't take the Canadian out of us! 25c cloudy and rainy and nice cool breezes. What a relief. I know some would say that's crazy. The down side to all this rain is that it takes longer for the clothes to dry on the line. I was told yesterday that a hurricane was passing through. Not forcasted, just a locals' intuition.....we'll see about that! Found a great "sanddollar" beach yesterday....each beach seems to carry it's own type of seashell...makes me wonder why. who would know that?

Socks.....save for a trip to California inNovember, I haven't worn socks for a year now. In fact, a year ago today, my little family boarded the 737er to Nadi, Fiji and ahead of us, well, I might do it differently next time. Having said that, we are definately here for another year. The ease of life in this slow lane is wonderful, no socks, shorts all the time, winter clothes consost of t-shirts, shorts and flipflops. Coffee is drank only as an addiction (not for a warm drink, I guess that's true for most Tim H followers though. Speaking of Tim H. Just went through my last ziplock bag of the stuff, now I can dive into Starbucks. I have a stash of "things-North-American")
We find ourselves at the bank talking about housing with them. Strange how they just throw out numbers at us for a potential house loan. Gerry calls it informal. I might say, .... interesting! They haven't even looked at our account and have already decided what we are worth....hmmm that might actually be a deep thought.
Must go, Dora the Explorer is on and my little Alec wants my company. I secretly like Dora anyway!

Sunny and way too warm and humid. Went for a walk into the cane fields just beyond our road. Avoiding the squashed-up-frogs and heaps of fresh, and, not-so-fresh garbage. The packs of dogs usually get to the garbage piles first. I haven't shopped at a dump in over a year. How I miss Yellowknife! but I digress.... Only 10 minutes into it, everyone in my family has their shirts off. Me, being the only female and not so much into topless-canefield-walking, sweated it out. It was 0900 and already 30c. We arrived home to realize we have lost our puppy on the journey, she found her own way home later...I hope this won't be a case of "puppies having puppies" Turn on the hose and cool ourselves down, wash off all the mud and squashed-up-frog remnants...slosh into the house and crank the AIR CONDITIONING....too hot by 10am to handle!

lots of rain in the last few days. If we had only purchased a kayak we could have floated all the way to Nadi town. The rivers on the side of the paved highways were a little distressing. Tried to visit a friend but were unable to reach his place as the water was up to most peoples waists! So much for my recently planted garden! All in all it's nice, as the storms lower the temps to a reasonable 25c...

Gerry flying to some fabulous resort but will be back in time to tune in to Hillsong. These are the days to enjoy. Now I must go as there are about 5 children at my gate all begging to play with Alec. (or is it his toys!)
